Important information

How well do you know that person you’re thinking about opening a joint account with? Because it’s not just your cash you’re trusting them with, it’s your credit score too – and potentially your financial independence. Here are some things to think about before signing on the dotted line:

  • Both account holders must be aged 18 or over
  • Student Current Account and Youth accounts cannot be made into joint accounts
  • You can both use the benefits and features that come with the account, without needing the approval of the other person
  • If the account gets into debt, including overdrafts, you’re both equally responsible for it. It’s not as easy as just removing your name from the account
  • A joint account ties your financial records together. Having a shared debt could negatively affect your credit score and make it harder for you to borrow money on things like loans and credit cards in the future
  • The other person doesn’t need your permission to increase the overdraft, set up a Direct Debit, standing order or withdraw money. They can use the account however and whenever they like. And so can you
  • Both of you will be able to see every penny that’s been spent on the account and every transaction, which might not be suitable for everyone
