Account closure

We want to make closing a current account with Lloyds as simple as possible.

Before you close your account, you may want to see what other accounts we have. Browse our range of current accounts to see if there’s one that better suits your needs.

Close your current account

Before you get started

If you want to move to a different provider, you can use the Current Account Switching Service. Your account will be closed automatically as part of that process.

If you’re not using the switching service, you’ll need to change or cancel any standing orders or direct debits on the account.

You will also need to withdraw all money from the account and pay off your overdraft if you have one, plus any interest.

Steps to take

We’ll guide you through it.

  • The simplest way to close your account is in our app:

    1. Log in to our app and select Search.
    2. Select Message us 24/7.
    3. Enter 'Close current account' and we'll help you.

Our virtual assistant may ask for some more details. If it can’t help, it will usually connect you to a helpful human who will reply as soon as possible.

  • You may be able to close your account through online banking:

    1. Log in to online banking and select ‘Help & Support’.
    2. Select ‘Message Us 24/7’ to open the Message Us service.
    3. Enter ‘Close current account’ and we'll help you.

When using ‘Message Us 24/7’, try and keep your question to 15 words or less. Set up notifications to find out when you receive a reply.

  • If you don't bank online

You can visit us in branch, by post, or you can give us a call.

    Branch

If you visit us in branch you'll need your current account debit card and a form of ID.

You'll need two forms of ID if your closing balance is £5,000 or more.

    Post

If you want to ask to close your account by post, send us a letter confirming which account you want to close to:

Lloyds Bank PLC Account Closure Team
    PO BOX 1
    BX1 1LT

Include the sort code and account number of the account you want to close. Give clear instructions if you want us to move money in the account to another Lloyds account, an account with another provider, or pay it by cheque. Be aware, we can’t give money over £10,000 unless you send certified copies of your ID.

You can also ask for an account closure form in branch or over the phone and send it back to us. If we can’t close your account by post, we may get in touch with you to complete the closure by another method.

Let’s look at the details

  • After processing your current account closure, we'll write to you by post or email to confirm the closure.

You'll need to destroy any debit cards you have for that account. You'll no longer be able to withdraw or pay in money into the account.

If you use the Current Account Switching Service, any direct debits and standing orders set up on your old account will transfer to your new account. Any payments made to your old account will automatically redirect to your new account. We'll also contact the sender with your new account details.

If you don't use the switching service, you'll need to update any payment details yourself. Learn how to change or cancel a standing order here and how to change or cancel a direct debit here.

Be aware that once we close your account, we can't reopen it.

  • We're by your side to help you deal with some of the money-related matters when someone has died, including closing a current account.

Visit our bereavement page to understand what you need to do to close an account of someone who has died.

  • It's normal that closing a bank account could have an effect on your credit score. This is because the closure of the account will update on your credit profile. How much it affects your score depends on various factors. These include the age of the account and whether it has an arranged overdraft. How you used the account and if you made payments on time may also have an effect.

Any change in your credit score due to closing an account will usually only be temporary.

  • Closing a joint account

To close an account, we only need instruction from one of the account holders.

You can do this in the same way as closing a regular current account, in branch, over the phone, by post or using the Web chat function in our mobile banking app.

You'll need to move any direct debits or standing orders and you must make sure you pay off any overdraft debt.

If you want to move to a different provider, you can use the Current Account Switching Service. Your account will be closed automatically as part of that process.

Removing someone from a joint account

To remove someone from a joint account, you'll need to visit a Lloyds branch. Any overdraft debt will need to be paid before we can remove someone from the account. Find your nearest branch.

  • We can give copy statements at any time during the five years after your account is closed.

If you still have access to our mobile banking app or online banking through having another account that stays open, you can continue to view electronic copies of your transaction history on your closed account through your Digital Inbox.

If you don't bank online or no longer have access, you can call us. There’s also a range of services for banking in person in your local area.
